Abstract
The aim of the present study was to teach mindfulness-based parenting to mothers and investigate its effectiveness on social adjustment and emotion regulation of at-risk adolescent girls. The present study was applied in terms of its purpose and quasi-experimental in terms of its method with a pre-test-post-test-follow-up design with a control group. The statistical population included all mothers with at-risk adolescent girls in the first year of the eighth and ninth grades of public schools in Tehran's District 2 and their adolescent daughters in the academic year 1402-1403. From among them, a sample of 30 people (30 adolescent girls with their mothers, a total of 60 people) was purposively selected and randomly assigned to two experimental and control groups. Before the intervention, a pre-test was taken from both groups, then the mothers of the experimental group underwent mindfulness-based parenting training in groups and weekly in 8 90-minute sessions. After the end of the intervention sessions, a post-test was administered to both groups of students, and one month after the end of the intervention, the questionnaires were distributed again between the experimental and control groups for follow-up. The instruments used in the study were the Emotion Regulation Scale (ERQ) and the Social Adjustment Questionnaire (SAQ). SPSS version 24 was used to analyze the data. The results of the analysis of variance test showed that mindfulness-based parenting for mothers of at-risk adolescent girls increased the mean of social adjustment and emotion regulation in their at-risk adolescent girls in the experimental group in the post-test phase compared to the pre-test phase, and the effectiveness of the program was stable until the follow-up phase. The findings of this study can help educational psychologists and school counselors to teach mindfulness-based parenting to increase social adjustment and emotion regulation in adolescents.
