Presenting an Empowerment-Based Parenting Model for Mothers of Adolescents with Hearing Loss: A Qualitative Study

Abstract
This qualitative study aimed to present an empowerment-based parenting model for mothers of adolescents with hearing loss. The sample of the peresent study was 12 specialists, teachers, and mothers of hearing-impaired adolescents in Mashhad in 2024, who were selected using purposive sampling. Themes related to empowerment-based parenting for mothers of adolescents with hearing loss were examined through in-depth semi-structured interviews until theoretical saturation was identified. Then, basic, organizing, and overarching themes were identified using inductive thematic analysis. Based on the results of the research, 5 organizing themes and 237 basic themes were identified for the comprehensive theme of empowerment-based parenting. Meanwhile, the discovered organizing themes included how to establish effective communication and desirable interaction with a adolescent with hearing loss, positive parenting with an emphasis on the talents and abilities of the adolescent with hearing loss, positive personality and psychological characteristics of oneself and the child with hearing loss, positive emotional and behavioral characteristics of oneself and the child with hearing loss, and the skills and characteristics of oneself and the child with hearing loss in society. Given that parents face specific challenges in raising their adolescents with hearing loss, it is of particular importance to pay attention to the empowerment-based parenting model for these adolescents.
